Expressive Painting

Is there such a thing as "bad" art?

MYP students may have come home talking about the visiting artist Anna Baer calling their art “bad.”

What is a “Bad Art Party”? 45 minutes of painting without the pressure for perfection. Trying to make “bad” art. It’s harder than it sounds. Making bad art, being okay with making bad art is part of the artistic practice. Feeling free from fear of failure allows us to play and be expressive without the pressure for perfection.

Students in Grade 6, 8 and 10 have finished their art residency with Anna Baer. They have been expressive risk-takers with abstract paint in the H.I.S. art studio.

Grades 7 and 9 have joined Anna Baer and had a “Bad Art Party” to start off the expressive time together. The students have not only been making “Bad Art” but have also been exploring their own concepts and communicating their ideas using the elements and principles of art as a recipe for an expressive painting.

Thank you, Anna Baer, for leading our Secondary students in creative play and expression.

Anna is hosting an Open Studio event this Saturday, 10.2.2024, from 15:00 – 18:00 in Heidelberg, Hauptstrasse 107, Heidelberg, 69117.  She will welcome visitors for a sneak peek at her new collection of large scale artwork.
