Sweet Welcome on The Last School Day in 2017

Today H.I.S. students received a sweet welcome as they made their way to the classrooms for the last time in 2017. With spirits lifted and the prospect of a well-earned break ahead, there was a cheerful atmosphere among students and staff throughout the day.

We wish all H.I.S. families and staff a wonderful break and look forward to seeing you in the New Year when school doors re-open on the 8th of January 2018.

Grade 2 Netball Training

For the past two weeks Grade 2 have had a guest PE teacher. Miss Fudge (Grade 2 Classroom Assistant) has introduced the students to a new sport that will be coming to H.I.S in the second Semester.Netball is an all inclusive sport played by those of all ages and different skill levels. Netball is a fast, exciting, true team sport which involves running, jumping, throwing and catching. It has similarities to basketball and handball, but with its own set of equipment and rules. During sport the Grade 2 students have learnt some new skills, whilst focusing on their balance and reaction time, as well as playing the much requested game at the end! It seems as if all students have enjoyed Netball so far.

Miss Fudge will be taking a Netball ASAP starting in Semester 2, which will be available to Grade 2,3,4 and 5. So if you feel your child would enjoy the opportunity to learn a new sport, make sure you get your ASAP proposal forms in on time, once they are sent out sometime after the winter break.

SAP Young Thinkers For A Day

Grade 9 & 10 Field Trip

Snap! was the lesson of the day for Grade 9 and 10 on Monday. The students travelled to SAP in Walldorf with their Design Teacher Frau Schwehm.A guided tour through the “Inspiration Pavillion” was the start of the day for the students. They were then welcomed by Grzegorz from the “Young Thinkers” programme who lead a Snap! workshop for the students. https://snap.berkeley.edu/snapsource/snap.html

Snap! is a programming language that can be used to write computer programs. The students created scripts for computer games.

Grzegorz and his colleague supported each student team individually. At the end of the workshop all teams presented the result of their programming.  Back in their own classroom the students gave feedback about their day at SAP:

I enjoyed having professional support for the programming practice.

The workshop could have been longer. I would love to go again and stay for a whole day.

I would like to know more about the differences between “Scratch” and “Snap!”. We should do workshops like this one more often.

I thought it was interesting to see how the TSG Hoffenheim Football Players use technology to support their training sessions.

I thought the SAP timeline in the Inspiration Pavilion was interesting. I learned a lot of facts about SAP.

The football stadium seats with sensors, were and interesting project.

The workshop was really good.

I enjoyed the guided tour, the amount of  information presented was just right.

Many thanks to Christiane Bauer and Grzegorz from SAP and Frau Schwehm for organising the Workshop and Field Trip for Grade 9 and 10 at very short notice.

Winter Fair

Snow was falling softly and silently (in the Multi Purpose Room!) and added a magic touch to the festive atmosphere of the H.I.S. Winter Fair yesterday.

Thank you to all students, parents, staff and elves for helping to plan, prepare, build, glue, decorate, cook, bake, roast, organise, play, sing, cheer, keeping the fire burning and most of all for spreading joy.

Have a wonderful Winter-Weekend.

Badminton Tournament

We had a very exciting 2-day Doubles (Mixed) Badminton Tournament on the 20th of November and the 4th of December in which 20 students (10 teams) participated. The energy and enthusiasm of the participants was really exemplary. Some of us discovered the hidden talent within ourselves. Our special appreciation to Mr. Knowles and Mrs. Mukherjee for overall co-ordination to keep the games on schedule and providing encouragement to all the players.

The results of the tournament are as follows:

  1. Winners: Laura & Mannan
  2. Runners- up: Joseph & Ignacio  Congratulations to all of the winners! And many thanks to Mr. Knowles, Mrs. Mukherjee, Mrs. Macdonald, the office and all the participants for making this event a great success!
